Lev Speaks on Global News Regarding Changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program

Lev Abramovich had the opportunity to speak with Global News about recent changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. Given the limited time of a four-minute segment, it was challenging to fully address the complexities of the topic. Lev wanted to expand on some key thoughts and concerns regarding these changes.

Political Concerns fuel the Changes to TFW Program

These changes to the temporary foreign worker program are perceivably driven primarily by political concerns, responding to declining approval ratings and shifting national attitudes toward immigration The changes reflect a lack of coherent immigration policy and political accountability, which erodes public trust. The current approach to the Temporary Foreign Worker program appears to be driven by a political survival strategy. The result is abrupt, significant changes that leave workers, industries, and employers unable to adequately plan or prepare, despite the government’s role in fostering reliance on low-wage temporary foreign workers in certain sectors.

The Changes Lack Consultation and Adequate Notice

In the interview, Lev highlights that the absence of consultation and proper notice contradicts the rule of law and broader democratic principles. This approach undermines the country, scapegoating employers and foreign workers, while those responsible for administering the program face no accountability.

Abuse of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program Still an Issue

Lev argues that the changes fail to address fraud and abuse within the TFW program, as job offers will continue to be sold, and workers will still be exploited by working beyond their stipulated hours. If the government is concerned about wage suppression, Lev suggests the conversation should encompass both lower- and higher-wage LMIAs. A solution could involve granting temporary foreign workers more rights and creating clearer pathways to permanent residency.

The need for a broader discussion on immigration policy is crucial, one which includes all stakeholders. Reactionary changes may boost short-term approval ratings but risk harming social cohesion and democracy in the long run.
